Almost, but not quite

Charcoal portrait drawing by Helen DavisonHere’s a new portrait sketch that I’m starting to appreciate a little more now I have finished working on it.

It’s close in likeness to the model, but it’s not quite her. The tiniest of changes here or there and she could suddenly appear; the nuances in the angle of an eyebrow, the corners of the mouth and so forth.

Nothing can be more than a millimetre or two away, but that’s all it takes with portraiture. I guess that’s why it is such a challenging, frustrating, and ultimately compelling pursuit.
