Bergamots on a Delft Plate
In more palette experimentation, I didn’t use any earth colours in this painting; relying on a palette containing Cadmium Lemon, Cadmium Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue and White. I again used minimum medium and found the texture and thickness of the paint seemed to feel more substantial as a result. I think this approach depends very much on the oiliness of each colour out of the tube as well as the absorbency of the painting ground. I am not aiming to cut out the use of mediums within my painting practice, it’s just nice to pay attention to the affect of every variable within the process. Here’s a detail of the paint surface up close.
