The China Deer
It’s been quite a while since I have attempted any of the small Alla Prima sketches that I periodically like to work on. It requires a different approach and handling to my more recent studies that have taken place over several sessions. Anyway, I struggled to get anything down and most of my attempts at various subjects ended up being scraped away after a couple of hours.
As a bit of fun, I picked up this kitschy little figurine (found at a vintage fair) and decided to slap on some paint as an exercise in loosening up and throwing caution to the wind to work more rapidly. I actually enjoyed it, and as study of form and texture, I kind of like it. So, it survived the cull.
