Hydrangea and Chinese Vase

Still life oil painting of a hydrangea and Chinese vase by Helen Davison

‘Hydrangea and the Chinese vase’. Oil on card, 6″ x 8″

With a few bits and pieces on the go, here’s a little one shot Alla Prima painting. I don’t really like it all that much overall, but there are a few areas here and there, such as the shadow under the flower head, and some of the glaze effect on the vase, that work quite well in isolation. The horizon line is too severe though and there are some very vague edges – too vague and poorly constructed.

Another thing, I’m starting to get quite bothered by the surface of the gessoed boards I made for these studies. It’s an acrylic gesso, which I find a little too vinyl, and the texture that I thought might be a nice effect when I prepared the boards, catches the light too much and distracts from the painting on top.
