Pewter and Satsuma

Still life oil painting of a peeled satsuma and pewter goblet by Helen Davison

‘Pewter and Satsuma’

This alla prima painting is quite broad in terms of its brushstrokes, with occasional impasto work on the surface. The pewter goblet is such a definite shape, I decided to place it against a pale backdrop with a white tablecloth to make the most of its dense colour and contour. While I was painting, I started to think about Whistler’s ‘Symphony in White’ paintings. I will further research and consider this aesthetic.
