The Three Graces (or quinces in a huddle)
I have a soft spot for quince. As well as liking the fruit, I like the word itself. Until quite recently we had a couple of Quince trees in the garden, but sadly they became diseased, and after consulting two tree surgeons, we cut them down as they couldn’t be saved. I hope to plant some more.
Trees that remain include a couple of Medlars. The fruit from these really are quite unique, and I will paint some soon to share how they look with those who aren’t familiar with them. (I believe the French call them cul de chien – the dog’s bottom!)
Back to the quince, I painted these with thoughts of how each fruit relates to its neighbour, lost edges, and shadow shapes – particularly how the shadow on the right side of the fruit appeared to blend into its cast shadow on the table cloth.
