Wilted Daffodils
I painted this a few weeks ago as we moved towards the end of Spring. I spent several days trying to capture these same flowers when they were freshly opened, but couldn’t resolve the composition, and regardless of paint passages that worked well, I scrapped that painting. This still life of the daffodils after they began to wilt, and the petals curl and dry out, happened very spontaneously and took at most a couple of hours to complete. I don’t know how easy it is to make out to another viewer, but having studied these flowers for the best part of a week, at this end stage of their life I feel as though I know them well, and I enjoy this study.
